THE SEED
There Was a Seed Planted in a Garden
Wisdom and understanding guard it.
The words of LIFE cause it to grow.
But for it to truly live, it first had to die.
A seed carries the promise of something it cannot yet see—life, fruit, a harvest waiting to be revealed.
Jesus said,
“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies… if it dies, it produces much grain.”-John 12:24
Jesus was speaking of Himself.
He was the Seed who would fall into the ground and die so that through His death, many could live.
He was the “firstborn among many brethren” (Romans 8:29).
And He invites us into this same pattern. The seed cannot remain what it is and become everything it was created to be.
“Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
(Matthew 16:25)
Death isn’t the destruction of the seed’s purpose; it is part of the fulfillment of its purpose.
In Him, we learn that surrender isn’t the end of life. It is where true life begins.
The Soil of Our Hearts
But a seed also needs soil that can receive it.
Hosea 10:12 says,
“Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD.”
Maybe the invitation is to allow the soil of our hearts to remain pliable before God—to ask Him where our hearts have become hardened and allow Him to break up the places where fear, disappointment, wrong beliefs, or lack of understanding have taken root.
And what seeds of LIFE does He want to plant there instead?
Wisdom and understanding help us recognize and guard what He is planting.
“In all your getting...get understanding.”
From Me Is Your Fruit
And before we ever talk about fruit, we have to begin with what Jesus has already done.
Jesus says,
“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.” John 15:3
Do we believe we’re clean?
When we don’t understand who we are because of Jesus, growth can become striving and fruit can become something we try to produce.
But fruit comes from Him.
Hosea 14:8 says,
“From Me is your fruit found.”
A seed doesn’t strain beneath the ground trying to become a tree.
It receives.
The soil receives the rain.
The seed receives what it needs.
Roots begin to deepen.
Life begins to move.
“I will plant it; and it will bring forth boughs, and bear fruit.”
Ezekiel 17:23
And we grow into—
“Trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”
Isaiah 61:3
God is glorified as His nature, character, and image is revealed through our lives throughout the earth.
What God produces in us isn’t only for us.
The love we receive becomes love we give.
The mercy we experience becomes mercy we extend.
The way He sees us begins to change the way we see others.
And eventually, the life that was once hidden inside the seed becomes fruit someone else can taste.
What began as a seed becomes a harvest.
And it all began with Jesus—the Seed who fell into the ground and died, so that many could live.
